A PROTEST song by a little-known Leeds band has climbed to the top ten of a US chart. Even though they only formed last year, Egokiller has reached number six in an anti-war chart set up by legendary Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young on his Living With War Today website.
The song, George W Bitch, has climbed above 2,400 signed and unsigned acts, beating contributions by Eric Clapton, System of a Down, JJ Cale and Willie Nelson. Now the bandmates are hoping to get enough votes to be the first UK outfit to reach the top spot in a chart dominated by North American artists.
Lead singer Greg Allen, who lives in Headingley, Leeds, said: "Our song was a new entry on the chart 14 weeks ago and has climbed above more than 2,000 artists. "The success of the song has led to an explosion of interest in us on our MySpace site and we have had offers of gigs in the USA and Europe. "We record all our own music and produce our own merchandise and clothing and are now looking for a manager and agent to help us making the most of our recent success," he added.
Egokiller formed last March to raise money for a cancer charity in memory of Greg's brother Jeff, from Doncaster, who died from cancer. After playing just a handful of gigs their MySpace presence was spotted by a promoter who signed them up as headline act on the main stage at a festival in Selbu, Norway. The bandmates are currently promoting their debut album.
